My husband hit the door with the car and disconnected the chain drive from the arm- any suggestions?

The door and spring are fine, but when he hit the door the motor went into reverse and pulled the chain into the opener, and it is now stuck inside. I found the reverse button but it doesn't seem to be working- the motor makes a noise, but does it need the weight of the door to pull it open? I understand it could be the gears are stripped, and if this is the case is there anything I can do, and how? I tried Genie's web sight for my chain drive, but no help there. Help! Thank you in advance for any tips!
